During the 18th century Philadelphia grew from a few hundred citizens in 1683 to over 45,000 by 1800. Philadelphia was second in size only to London in the British Commonwealth.
The home of the 1st and 2nd Continental Congresses, Philadelphia was where the American Revolution was planned and executed. After the war, the Philadelphia Convention of 1787 produced the Constitution that is still the heart of American Democracy.
